FLOODS FOLLOWED BY LANDSLIDES
Flooding is a down
phenomenon (which is usually dry) because increasing volume of water. Flooding
can occur due to various factors such as excessive water flooding in a place
due to heavr rain, overflowing of river water, or oautbreak of a river dam. Not
infrequently because, the intensity of the rain that is too high in floods can
also be accompanied by landslides, characterized by the movement of soil or
rocks, which causes fall of soil to fall down.
One are phenomenon
floods and landslides was Jember, East Java. This disaster happened at 1
January 2006 (Sunday), 23.30 local time, (Indonesian local time equals to + 7
hours GMT. Some areas in Jember are vulnerable to disaster. The floods affected
12 villages in 10 sub-districts, Panti, Rambiouji, Balung, Patrang, Kaliwates,
Wuluhan, Puger, tanggul, sukorambi, and Arjasa. The worst affected areas are
Pecan, Panti and Suci.
Some of environmental
law expert analyzed these floods in Jember are especially 12 villages in 10
sub-districts are an ecological disaster that caused by poor environmental
management as evidenced in the rapid rate deforestation in the province. Three
days of heavy rain and the overflow of the Dinoyo River also contributed to
flash floods and landslides. Human factors also affect this disaster because
there are illegal logging that has damaged the catchment are.
As the local media
report the flood and landslides carrying mud inundated at least 2.500 houses
and thousand of vehicle.according the government last information, flas floods
damaged about 300 houses. According to the intial report provided by SATLAK PBP
Jember, 56 houses were totally destroyed or swept away, and 47 others heavily
damaged. Seven bridges and 13 hectares of paddy field were also damaged.
According to PMI’s rapid assessment, the recent disaster has damaged 500 houses
in Panti sub-district, 55 in Tanggul sub-district, 40 in Rambipuji sub-district
and 5 in Arjasa sub-district. During the incident, thousands of people have
sought temporary shelter in mosques, school buildings on higher grounds,
fearing more flash floods an landslides will come.
